Our Projects

Our projects include cellar conversions, retrofit and new build basements, and above-ground extensions, renovations and refurbishment. We’ve transfomed many homes, creating valuable extra space — even in areas where extending traditionally would be impossible.

Cellar Conversion & Single Storey Extension – St Albans

  • The lightwell fills the room with natural daylight.
  • The bespoke media system makes best use of all the space available. Natural daylight from the lightwell can be seen in the reflection on the screen but is easily blocked with blinds. Too sunny is a nice problem to have in a basement!
  • The staircase leads directly from the hallway into the new room.
  • The basement room has added another valuable living area to this family home.

Many of our clients require more space within their home to meet the day to day demands of a growing family. Our brief was to turn what was once a disused, damp cellar into a modern and sizeable additional reception/media room.

Tucked away neatly underneath the hallway stairs is a second staircase which leads you directly to our client’s newly formed basement. With plenty of natural daylight provided by a lightwell, the room is multifunctional and can adapt as the family’s needs change.

It was challenging for our client to create more space in their home. The house is situated within the conservation area, therefore, excavating underneath was an attractive option and made the most of the property’s footprint.

Cellar Conversion – St Albans

  • Kitchen and renovated stairway to leading to the basement.
  • The room is a flexible space that may be used as a guest bedroom, playroom or cinema room.
  • The room is a flexible space that may be used as a guest bedroom, playroom or cinema room.
  • Stairway to ground floor.

Our clients wanted to transform a small terraced house in St Albans’ Conservation Area into a modern family home.

Direct, easy access to the basement by a renovated staircase has turned the cellar into an integral part of the client’s reimagined property.

We dug down, increasing ceiling height, underpinned existing foundations and waterproofing the space. We constructed a light well with a doubled-glazed window complying with building regulations for fire escape provisions.

Installation of modern electrics and light fittings produced a flexible room to be used as a guest bedroom, playroom or even home cinema room.

Cellar Conversion – St Albans

  • Lounge and playroom with natural light provided by lightwell
  • Stairway and custom-built storage
  • Lounge sofa and natural lighting from lightwell
  • View out through lightwell

With a growing family, a need for space to work from home and a place for guests to stay, our brief was to provide as much room as possible for our client to create a multi-functional space.

Our sympathetic conversion of the home’s existing cellar, retains its original feature lightwell, but adds a new timber staircase that seamlessly blends the conversion with the original house.

The client’s use of bespoke joinery makes the most of all the available space. Hidden storage cleverly conceals the children’s toys and a built-in desk also doubles as a reading nook for the children. Natural daylight combined with the mood lighting transforms the playroom to an office and then to a relaxing place by night once the day’s work is done. With plenty of space for a sofa bed, our client now has extra room to accommodate guests.

Cellar Conversion – St Albans

  • View of room and lightwell
  • Stairway
  • Lightwell
  • Storage

This property, had a damp, disused cellar that was hard to reach using its old, steep stairs. The clients wanted a dual-purpose space could be used both for entertaining, and as a safe playroom for their young child.

We transformed the room from an uninhabitable, damp, dark space with an uneven concrete floor to a dry, bright, flexible room. Opening up a lightwell provides plenty of natural light and an airy feel, and new timber stairs now allow easy access from the rest of the house.

This St Albans home’s cellar was damp, odorous and affecting other living spaces within the property. We were tasked with turning it into a luxury living space.

We refurbished the space, increasing the floor to ceiling height and installed a waterproofing system, mechanical ventilation and insulation that ensures the space remains dry and comfortable.

A new staircase with integrated storage was constructed, providing much improved, safe access to the cellar, whilst the addition of spot lighting and a bespoke fireplace has created a space full of light and warmth.

The client was delighted with their new living space full of charm and character, bringing to life the hidden period features of this beautiful Victorian property.

Cellar Conversion – St Albans

This cottage in the heart of the St Albans’ conservation area needed extra living space. Close proximity to neighbouring cottages greatly reduced options for extending.

We turned the cellar, which was used as occasional storage, into a modern bedroom slightly increasing the head height and installing a doubled glazed window, flooding the space with natural light. The installation of a Delta waterproofing system and insulation keeps the space warm and dry. The interior and character of the property boasts an environment perfect for relaxing and entertaining extended family, right in heart of the city centre.

Cellar Conversion – St Albans

  • Playroom doorway
  • Bedroom alcove
  • Bedroom corner view
  • WC

A growing family living in the heart of St Albans was keen to remain in this beautiful period property but lacked the space needed for their growing family.

With no option of extending upwards or outwards the client appointed us to convert their unused cellar to provide an additional 16 square meters of flexible living space.

The addition of a lining wall to the perimeter of the cellar contained a waterproofed membrane and insulation keeping the living space warm and dry, whilst the addition of contemporary lighting creating a bright and welcoming environment.

The flexible living arrangement was complemented with the addition of an enclosed WC, providing a functional space required for this growing family.

Cellar Conversion – Hertford

  • Stairway

In the heart of Hertford, nestled beneath a beautiful Victorian cottage was a disused, damp cellar. We were appointed by its owners to transform the space into a luxury cinema room.

The floor-to-ceiling height was increased, providing a feeling of space, and bespoke recesses conceal audiovisual equipment, giving a sleek, sophisticated look.

We constructed a light well, adding natural light to the space, and constructed a lining wall with a waterproof membrane and insulation that keeps the cinema room warm and dry.

Installation of a contemporary staircase provides access consistent with that of the property’s upper floors. Spot, wall and staircase lighting and under-floor heating has created a space perfect for entertaining friends and family.
